Coach Spotlight: Coach Kalil Sherrod
Each month, we’re spotlighting one of our incredible coaches so you can get to know the people who make The Spot what it is. This month, we’re kicking things off with Coach Maeve Willis, who’s been a part of The Spot family since 2020. As she approaches her six-year anniversary in January, Maeve shares how her role has grown, what drives her as a coach, and a few things you might not know about her outside the gym.
Where are you from and where did you go to school?
I’m originally from New York City. I lived in Atlanta for the past six years before moving to Columbus this November. I played basketball through college at the Division II level and later spent some time playing semi-pro.
What is your background and what got you into working out?
Both of my parents were trainers when they were younger, so I grew up around fitness. I started lifting consistently at 13, usually 2–3 days a week. I played tennis from ages 7–14 and basketball from 7 years old through college. Even while I was still playing, I loved coaching part-time, and I always knew I’d eventually move into Strength & Conditioning full time. After retiring from basketball, I made that transition and haven’t looked back.
How long have you been Coaching at The Spot and what is your favorite part about working at The Spot?
I’ve been with The Spot for about three and a half weeks, and my favorite part is getting to coach people on a bigger scale again. It’s been great connecting with so many members and helping them push their performance forward.
What do you like to do when you aren't Coaching or training?
I enjoy relaxing with my wife while watching TV, playing video games, and listening to good podcasts.
Would you share with us one of your favorite quotes?
